No IDs, no passports, no visas required – check in at Hawaii Adda to fly high

“Terrace café *swipe* Rooftop lounge *swipe* Outdoor sit out *swipe* urghhh but it’s raining cats and dogs and we gotta find an indoor restaurant Bro”

And that’s how we came across our latest find, as we fled new market to find shelter and food (basic needs of man, amiright?) while cursing ourselves for not carrying an umbrella. Running and wheezing we glanced up to what we thought was a silver lining in the clouds, a giant board lit brightly that lured us to it.

As we climbed up the stairs to the fourth storey, we imagined if Hawaii Adda crew had taken their overwhelming “FLY” sign a little too literally and expected us to fly up the floors to make up for the absence of a lift. But a little exercise never hurt anyone, hopefully.

Our first glimpse inside took us by surprise as the look and feel of the place was unlike any other in the vicinity. Without wasting any more time, we hurried over and sat ourselves down at a table of our choice as it was Monday night and there was only one other group apart from us.

We were promptly served with water and were handed the menus. Taking a glance, we discovered a variety of appetizers called small plates and main courses called big plates which were a combination of various cuisines but with a unique take or so it seemed.

While we waited for our order, which didn’t take very long maybe because it wasn’t a busy night, we discussed the interesting interiors and furniture. The high tables designed for two with the table top being a laminated board game definitely spiked our curiosity. We identified ludo, snakes & ladder and chess on different tables which seemed like a new take on playing board games. Linearly structured as it was, the café incorporated various seating designs, opposite to the high chair tables were the standard tables where we sat and the narrow passage led up to a square room like area which was done up in an informal manner with a black leather mattress laid on the floor with colourful bolster cushions and a wooden box like table in the centre, giving a sense of the traditional Baithaks. To complete the visual was the runway wallpaper on the main wall which was definitely in sync with their airport theme. The colourful fake window shutters with airport and travel related pop-art & graphic imagery added to the ambience. Parallel to this stood huge openable windows giving a panoramic view and balanced the non-air-conditioned environment. As architecture students what caught our attention was the multiple barrel vault roof design which was unexpected but well executed. Right at the entrance you can also find a separate semi private area for dining with a single table with a seating for 8-10 persons.

Opting to try out the hookah, we called for brainfreezer flavour and were not disappointed. It was well made, the flavour was not overpowering and the coal was changed pretty regularly.

The food arrived shortly and looked delicious, we were impressed by the presentation of the dishes. Our first dish was the 3 way hummus with fresh veggies described in the menu as an assortments of 3 chickpea based dips served with fresh cucumber, radishes, carrots and fried bread sticks. Served in a pan with the three dips in small bowls and the carrots and breadsticks in a small bucket like container. We asked the waiter as to why the cucumber and radishes were missing and he seemed a bit puzzled but eventually got us chopped cucumbers. Better late than never? The second dish was a falafel fury burger served again in a similar pan along with fries and a dip. We thought it was ironic as the second you enter the restaurant, you are greeted by a large board lit by bright red LED which spells out “Feed your soul” but the food completely lacked that spark and soul. The taste was decent but completely missed the yummy factor we were hoping for. A 5/5 for the presentation but hardly any marks for the taste. Their only saving grace was the fudge brownie shake which tasted quite good but the quantity could have been more. Less is more? Probably not.
