Mandu
A walk through the romantic saga of Rani Roopmati and Baz Bahadur
Mandu with kuriouskannya
Until that day kuriouskannya had only admired the huge fortress in her
architecture textbooks! Mandu, in the Malwa district of Madhya Pradesh is a
heart of historic jewels. Rich history, huge citadels, Mahals, Temples,
waterfalls ,Mandu owns them all by itself!
How
kuriouskannya got there?
Mandu
is barely 200km from Indore. Local buses as well as private cabs run throughout
the day. The cabs range from Rs.2500-3000 generally , one can break the deal
down to a 2000/- for the entire day if they are good at bargaining.
Waiting at the hotels doorstep in Indore kannya's ride for
the day was ready. Kannya along with her friends hopped on to the cab and
started the day long tour! The driver , was a very facetious and entertaining
man. He had been in the driving business for the past 10 years and came out to
be more of a tour guide rather than a driver. As they drove through the
route to Mandu they were enthralled by the unique serene and peaceful scapes. Endowed
with scenic natural beauty, the route was at its magical best during the
monsoon season.
As
the driver was well-versed with the fort and it's surrounding areas , the first
steps was a tad kilometers from the 45km encircling protection wall of Mandu.
The spot was a home for a huge waterfall. Because of a high foot movement the
entire spot had been developed as a pretty fairytail-ish picnic spot. Bhutta,
nimbu paaani and a lot of local hawkers were there to binge on. Besides to the
mesmerizing wallpaper backdrops, one interesting character of the spot was the
camel ride, quite bizarre but it was a little hatke and added spice to the
overall feel of the place.
It was finally time to enter the fortress standing
unpright on the mountains of the Vindhyachal range. The first glance gave an
eerie feeling because of the rumbled structure. As we drove through the 12
darwazas to the Mahal we could relate to all the history we had studied in the
past years. The gigantic masses spread over a vast area are renowned for the fabled love story of poet-prince Baz Bahadur
and his favourite consort, the beautiful Rani Roopmati, who was a gifted Hindu
poet and singer.
First
stop : Rani Roopmatis Pavilion
Rani Roopmatis Pavilion is the face
of Mandu because of a huge erratic past. Perched atop a lofty hill, overlooking
the Nimar plains, Roopmati’s Pavilion is a large sandstone structure. Roopmati’s
Pavilion represents a lot of peculiar architectural features a baradari structure
with twelve doors designed to allow the free flow of air, the chhattris, beautiful stone corridors with arched openings. The arches
open out the large picturesque views of the city of mandu as well as the Talab.
Second stop : Jahaz Mahal
Jahaz Mahal ‘Ship Palace’ is noted
for its romantic beauty. The structure is constructed linearly in
between the waters of the Munja and Kapur tanks, the 120-metre long and
15-metre wide palace resembles a large ship anchored at the port. The
uncanny water harvesting system of the Mahal is its trademark. Alluring carved square chhattris ornamented with beautiful squiches in different chambers and walls along with the domed
pavilion are few among the many specialties of the mahal.
Kuriouskannya loved her escape
